The Psychological Reason You Get Defensive (Hint: It's Not A Character Flaw)

Image
Recently, I met with a couple for whom even the simplest request from one partner—for example, "Would you be sure to park your car under the oak tree?"—was interpreted as an insult or attack by Sam, the other partner. "Don’t you think I would have thought of that on my own?" he would say. With some digging into their personal histories, I discovered that Sam's father had always corrected his kids by telling them they were worthless; as a result, Sam became  "allergic" to any request or statement that could be interpreted as suggesting any kind of inadequacy on his part . This caused him to develop a defensive response, which, while effective in rebuffing a real attack, only serves to close down communication and invite passive-aggression in an otherwise healthy relationship. If you know (or are in a relationship with) a defensive person, it can be extremely frustrating. You know you aren't doing anything wrong, and yet you can't commu...

This Single Dad's Adoption Story Makes Us Cry Every Time

Image
Here at mbg, we believe you’re the expert on your own wellness journey, and becoming a parent is no different. Yet from the moment of conception, or often even before, mothers and fathers are told what to do. Our  Parenting Paths  week celebrates a handful of parents who’ve listened to their intuition and gone their own way. One family  traveled the world  while raising their daughters; this single mom takes a  spiritual approach  to parenting; and more.  You may remember Hill Harper as a keynote speaker at mbg's annual wellness summit, revitalize—this year, he opened with  a beautiful monologue  about the importance of coming together as a community, finding your holy key, and closed onstage in gratitude with his adopted son, Pierce. There was not a single dry eye in the room! You may also know Harper from television. He's an actor by trade and has been on CSI New York, The Good Doctor,  and  Homeland , to name a few. Or pe...

The Yoni Egg Path to Sexual Pleasure

Image
Something deep is happening within my spirit and my soul. I feel an indescribable peace, synchronicities are abounding and my sexuality is taking on new heights. I have been working with yoni eggs which are various types of crystals that are carved to the shape of a small, medium or large egg. The crystal eggs are used for different purposes depending on what energies they emanate. I found out about crystal eggs from a young woman who teaches on sexual health and promotes the yoni eggs for internal healing.  She told me about the eggs and some of the benefits they were known for. As I thought more about the work I knew that I needed to do, the more I thought about using them. I was already into crystal energy, having collected quite a few stones that would assist in chakra alignment and bringing out my true essence. Using Jade Egg’s For Healing Of Mind, Body, Soul When I made the decision to begin using yoni eggs I knew I was ready for major healing with my divine bei...

6 Breastfeeding Tips for Your Hospital Stay - Health Care

Image
Get your baby hooked on the breast as early as possible. Get your baby used to  breastfeeding  as quickly as you can after she's born. Here are six things you can do in the hospital: 1. Put baby to your breast right after birth.   Newborns  are born with a suckling instinct that's strongest in the first hour of life. Taking advantage of this right away may make breastfeeding easier going forward. 2. Try nursing approximately every two hours, or whenever your baby cries.  This will start your milk production and give both you and baby practice at latching on. Also, baby will get colostrum, a premilk liquid that's rich in immunity-boosting antibodies. 3. Enlist the help of a nurse or lactation consultant to "spot" you each time you feed.  Once you leave the hospital you may not have so many experts at hand! Don't hesitate to ring the nurse-call button frequently to get assistance. 4. Take a breastfeeding class if it is offered.  The cliche ...

Love Wins! 6 Milestones In LGBT Rights Worth Celebrating This Year

Image
Equal rights are the bedrock of The United States. Yet from racial equality to gender and LGBT equality, so many Americans have spent their lives fighting for the freedom to live without discrimination. While we still have a long way to go, this country has made progress toward real, unconditional equality that's worth celebrating. Today, as the NYC Pride March takes place, we want to acknowledge the milestones in equal rights that we've reached since last year's march, and express our gratitude and appreciation for everyone who fought to make them happen. So here's a timeline of the biggest victories in the war on discrimination in the past year. 1. (June 24, 2016) The Stonewall National Monument was designated by Barack Obama as the first national LGBT rights monument. On June 28, 1969, the community uprising in response to a police raid on the Stonewall Inn (one of the few establishments which then welcomed openly gay people) catalyzed equal rights act...

The Secrets Of The Male Sex Drive (A Doctor Explains)

Image
Photo: Stocksy We talk a lot about sex, yet we don’t  really  talk about it. We wonder whether it’s good or bad and whether we're having enough or too much—but we mostly just gloss over terms like  libido  and  sex drive , what's behind them, and why they sometimes become a problem. But we need to talk about sex drive and here’s why: Your libido is a marker of your health. Healthy people have healthy sex drives and a healthy sex drive is too often thought of as something that belongs only to younger men. We tend to think that it’s "normal" to not feel the same way when we're older, say in our late 30s (or even earlier), 40s, 50s, and beyond. And maybe it is "common." But it’s not healthy—and it’s certainly not optimal. Sex drive isn't simple. A healthy sex drive depends primarily on optimal hormone balance and adequate brain and neurotransmitter function. Hormones are chemical messengers in the body and they inform your body and brain ...
